The Cooperative Spirit is Alive

Ozarks holidays are filled with traditions. From gathering with families around a meal to placing tinsel on the trees—the holidays are a time for togetherness. Especially this time of year, there is no greater sound than that of my grandchildren’s laughter when we spend time together. The spirit in the air truly makes it a magical season.

The cooperative spirit is alive and well in the Ozarks. We live in an area where our neighbors take care of one another. This was evident at our annual Turning Hunger into Hope events at local grocery stores. Our members gave of their hearts, providing thousands of pounds of food and dollars to help neighbors in need. Every bit we raised stays in the local communities we serve helping those who could use a hand up. Local deer hunters, too, are still collecting venison through our Share the Harvest program, in which we partner with the Missouri Department of Conservation to cover processing fees for deer meat donated to local food pantries.

The holidays can be a challenging period for many families. Rising energy costs and economic uncertainties may weigh heavily on our members. That’s why we offer programs such as budget billing and rebates, and partner with organizations such as OACAC and their Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) to assist when times are hard.

Our world has seen a lot of changes lately. We can all agree the cooperative principles of concern for community and cooperation are needed in our world now more than ever. White River Valley Electric Cooperative was formed 85 years ago by hard-working members who rolled up their sleeves, donated their trucks, ladders, and supplies to help get electricity to rural areas. Through unity and determination, our Cooperative was born. In that same spirit of giving, I encourage each of you to consider how you can contribute to our cooperative community. Whether it’s participating in a local food drive, sharing your harvest, volunteering your time, or simply checking on your neighbors, every small act of kindness can make a lasting difference.

Thank you for being an integral part of our cooperative family. I wish you all a joyful and spirited holiday season!
